The GOODFOOD project takes the students from the 1st General Lyceum of Rafina (Greece) to visit the University of Agricultural Science, 2023.

The group visited the facilities of the Department of the Science of Animal Production starting at the Laboratory of Applied Hydrobiology. Here they saw the production unit of freshwater and saltwater fish. Ms Christina Zadioti, PhD candidate of the Department, spoke about the problems of fishing in the sea and the high prospects of aquaculture in Greece. The new trends in aquaculture turn towards units located far away from the coast while there has been extended research on new sources of food for the fish. One of these sources involves the addition of microorganisms into the fish diet (e.g. yeasts).

After that, the students visited the breeding farm of the school which has got cows and sheep. Ms Panagiota Koutsouli, Associate Professor of the Department of Zoology Science, referred to the tribes to which the different animals belong to, their ethology as well as to the production of meat, milk and wool. The students had the opportunity to see newborn lambs breastfeeding, mature female lambs and male ones – rams- separately.

Finally, the students went on to see the part where the bees and the silkworms live. In this case, Mr Lazarakis talked about the life cycle of the bee and of the silkworm, and the production process of honey and silk.
